Learn How To Use Values Of Light And Dark To Paint Stronger Paintings

SEE SAMPLE OF Lesson Below of two artists creating on watercolor paper and sharing tips and tricks on using values.

Value deals with the lightness or darkness of a color. Since we see shapes, forms and objects because of how dark or light they are, value is incredibly important to art. Value is the key to the illusion of light.

Value in creating art is basically how light or dark something is on a value scale of white to black (with white being the highest value and black being the lowest value).

Most artists will agree that values are widely considered to be one of the most important factors or variables to the success of a painting, even more so than your choice or selection of color (hue).

Changing the Value of a color in art should be simple to understand, however the power of varying the lightness or darkness of color can make it a challenging concept for artists to grasp or use.

Learn to recognize that you can have two different colors which may appear completely different, but have exactly the same value. There would be little contrast between these colors despite the different hues.

On the other hand, you can create have many different values of the same hue. These are called tints and shades. You can produce tints of a color by adding white and shades by adding black.
